The Celestron StarSense Explorer DX 6" brings together impressive visual performance, easy StarSense navigation and a compact design that makes serious astronomy remarkably approachable.

What Can You See?
The DX 6 really begins to show its strength when you turn it towards the deep sky.
From New Zealand, Omega Centauri and 47 Tucanae are outstanding targets, with their dense concentrations of stars becoming increasingly apparent as conditions improve. The Carina Nebula reveals broad areas of bright nebulosity threaded through one of the richest regions of the southern Milky Way.
Galaxies also become worthwhile objects to seek out. Centaurus A and the Sculptor Galaxy are excellent southern targets, while planetary nebulae, open clusters and double stars provide an enormous variety of objects throughout the year.
The 150mm aperture is equally rewarding on the planets. Saturn's rings and the Cassini Division can be visible when conditions are good. Jupiter shows its four bright Galilean moons, major cloud belts and, with favourable timing and steady air, features such as the Great Red Spot. Mars can reveal darker surface markings when favourably positioned.
The Moon is naturally spectacular as well, with crater walls, mountain ranges, ridges and shadows showing extensive fine detail.
You do not need to live under pristine dark skies to enjoy the DX 6. Planets, double stars, clusters and brighter nebulae remain excellent from New Zealand towns and cities. Darker skies increasingly benefit galaxies and fainter nebulae, allowing the 150mm aperture to show more of what it can do.
Daytime Viewing
The DX 6 is also a very capable long-distance terrestrial telescope.
Its 1500mm focal length gives excellent reach for specific distant subjects such as boats offshore, coastlines, mountain features and wildlife. The supplied erect-image diagonal provides an upright, correctly oriented view, so terrestrial subjects appear naturally.
During the day, the telescope is pointed manually using the red-dot finder and slow-motion controls. StarSense navigation itself is designed for the night sky.
At very long distances, atmospheric turbulence and heat shimmer can sometimes limit daytime detail, but under stable conditions the compact Schmidt-Cassegrain design provides impressive reach without requiring a long optical tube.
How StarSense Explorer Works
StarSense Explorer uses your smartphone camera and Celestron's dedicated StarSense dock to recognise actual star patterns overhead and determine where the telescope is pointing.
After a simple initial alignment, the app generates a list of objects currently available to observe. Choose something you would like to see and follow the arrows while you move the telescope by hand. As you approach the target, the guidance becomes increasingly precise; when the bullseye turns green, the object is ready to view through the eyepiece.
This is not a motorised GoTo telescope and it does not automatically track objects. StarSense provides the navigation while you remain in control of the telescope.
On a telescope capable of showing such a broad range of objects, that guidance is particularly valuable because it helps you make much fuller use of what the 150mm optics can reveal.
DX Mount, Slow-Motion Controls & Practical Design
The DX 6 uses a manual Alt-Azimuth mount on an adjustable full-height tripod.
For larger movements, simply guide the telescope by hand. Once you are close to the target, geared slow-motion controls on both axes allow much finer adjustment.
That precision is particularly useful when observing planets, double stars and other higher-magnification targets, where even a small movement of the telescope can shift the object significantly within the eyepiece.
Celestron's StarBright XLT coatings help maximise light transmission and contrast through the optical system, while the enclosed Schmidt-Cassegrain design protects the mirrors and contributes to the telescope's compact, portable format.
The supplied erect-image diagonal, red-dot finderscope and conventional eyepieces also mean the telescope remains fully usable without a smartphone whenever you prefer traditional manual observing.

What does the 150mm aperture give me?

Solar Warning
Never look directly at the Sun with the naked eye or with an optic (unless you have the proper solar filter). Permanent and irreversible eye damage may result.
Never use your optic to project an image of the Sun onto any surface. Internal heat build-up can damage the optic and any accessories attached to it.
Never leave your optic unsupervised. Make sure an adult who is familiar with the correct operating procedures is with your optic at all times, especially when children are present.
