The NexStar Evolution 6 is the smallest and most manageable telescope in Celestron’s premium Evolution range, but it retains the technology and mount quality that make the series so appealing.
Its 150mm Schmidt-Cassegrain optical system packs a 1500mm focal length into a tube only around 41cm long. That compact design is particularly well suited to detailed views of the Moon and planets, double stars, globular clusters and many smaller deep-sky objects, without requiring a long telescope tube to store, carry or set up.
There is enough aperture here to make astronomy genuinely rewarding. Saturn’s rings, Jupiter’s cloud belts and moons, intricate lunar detail and bright star clusters are all excellent targets, while nebulae, globular clusters and brighter galaxies extend the experience well beyond the Solar System.

What Can You See?
The Evolution 6 is particularly impressive on the Moon and planets. Saturn’s rings are unmistakable and the Cassini Division can be seen under good conditions. Jupiter shows its major cloud belts and four bright Galilean moons, with additional atmospheric detail becoming visible when conditions cooperate. Mars can reveal darker surface markings when favourably positioned, while the Moon offers an extraordinary landscape of craters, mountain ranges, ridges and changing shadows.
Its 150mm aperture also opens up a rewarding range of deep-sky objects. New Zealand observers can explore southern favourites such as Omega Centauri, 47 Tucanae and the brighter regions of the Carina Nebula, along with planetary nebulae, double stars and numerous open and globular clusters. Under darker skies, brighter galaxies such as Centaurus A and the Sculptor Galaxy become worthwhile visual targets and the telescope reaches considerably further into the deep sky.
You certainly do not need a remote dark-sky site to enjoy it. The Moon, planets, double stars, clusters and several brighter nebulae remain rewarding from New Zealand towns and cities. How NexStar Evolution Works
The Evolution 6 gives you the benefits of a sophisticated computerised telescope without requiring you to already know the night sky.
Celestron’s SkyAlign system uses three bright reference objects to establish where the telescope is pointing. Once aligned, you can select targets using either the SkyPortal app or the supplied NexStar+ hand controller.
Built-in Wi-Fi allows a compatible phone or tablet to connect directly to the telescope. SkyPortal provides an interactive map of the sky so you can explore what is visible and choose an object to observe.
The Evolution then slews to the selected target and continues tracking it as the Earth rotates.
That is the real benefit of the system: choose what interests you, let the telescope find it, and then concentrate on observing through the eyepiece while the mount keeps the target in view.
Evolution Mount, Power & Practical Design
The Evolution mount is a major part of what makes this telescope so easy to own and use.
Its built-in LiFePO₄ rechargeable battery eliminates the need for an external power supply during normal observing. Celestron rates it for up to approximately 10 hours of continuous use, and a USB charge port can top up a compatible phone or other device during an observing session.
The computerised single-arm Alt-Azimuth mount uses brass worm gears and improved motors for accurate GoTo movement and tracking, while manual altitude and azimuth clutches allow the telescope to be repositioned manually when required.
A heavy-duty, adjustable stainless-steel tripod provides a stable floor-standing base. Integrated carrying handles help with setup, and the telescope separates into optical tube, mount and tripod rather than requiring the complete system to be carried fully assembled.
Celestron’s StarBright XLT coatings maximise useful light transmission through the optical system, while the Evolution platform also leaves room for your interests to develop. FAQ
Do I need an internet connection to use the telescope?
No. The Evolution creates its own Wi-Fi network so a compatible phone or tablet can communicate directly with the telescope. You should install the SkyPortal app beforehand, but an internet connection is not required for normal telescope control while observing.
Can I use the Evolution 6 for astrophotography?
Yes. It is particularly well suited to lunar and planetary imaging, and shorter-exposure deep-sky imaging is also possible in its standard Alt-Azimuth configuration. If astrophotography becomes a larger part of the hobby later, the Evolution system supports additional equipment and equatorial configurations for more advanced imaging.
